Wartime Weddings

From Jan 19th, 2010 until Apr 4th, 2010

Special garments are an important part of many rituals the world over, but the wedding dress tops them all.  This show will display bridal wear from the years of the First and Second World Wars, when weddings offered happy reprieve from hard times.

Native/American Apparel

From Jan 19th, 2010 until Apr 4th, 2010

Guest curator: Jenny Western, Urban Shaman Gallery

Bringing together artwork by Contemporary Aboriginal artists, Lita Fontaine and KC Adams, alongside pieces drawn from the collection at the Costume Museum of Canada, Native/American Apparel looks at the relationship of fashion, clothing, and textile to the representation of Indigenous identities. By juxtaposing historical artifacts with current artworks, Native/American Apparel encourages viewers to consider the role of the collection and exhibition of objects made by First Nations and Metis people in galleries and museums, particularily those objects made by women.

Women of Style Nominations

With the success of last year's Women of Style exhibit, it is our hope to once again celebrate local, stylish women in 2010.  This year, we are asking for your input.  This exhibit acknowledges local women for their individual sense of style and the contributions they make to the community.  We would like to thank last year's Women of Style, Charlene Diehl, Deborah Schnitzer, Andrea Vinci, Marie Bouchard, and Tannis Mindell, each of whom demonstrated uniqueness in their fashion sense and admirable accomplishments in their careers and community service. Who would you like to see acknowledged this year?  Send in your nominations for 2010's Women of Style to our curator, Jennifer Bisch, at jenny@costumemuseum.com.  Tell us the name of your nominee and why you think she should be recognized in this year's exhibit.  Chosen nominees who consent to participate will be asked to supply the museum with 3-5 garments and accessories of their choice, which will be on display in our second gallery from April 6-June 13, 2010.  A formal announcement of this year's Women of Style and our celebratory gala will be made in the next newsletter.

MAD HATTERS IN TRAINING (an introduction to millinery)

Our hat collection at the Costume Museum never fails to fascinate visitors. So often, people gazing at hats on display are filled with awe and nostalgia, sometime commenting, "We just don't wear hats like we use to!" Museum volunteers, Anna Lenters and Brenda Belmonte would like to turn that trend around by offering a 10-week course in millinery: the dying art of hat making. Students will be instructed with this amazing craft, starting with buckram on wooded hat forms and ending with an amazing final product of wearable art. You will learn the art of hat making and be able to decorate the final product with trims such as lace and feathers as you wish.

Class Time: 7-9pm every Tuesdays

Cost: $200 (Supplies ARE provided)

Starts February 9th! To reserve a space, pay by phone at 989 0072 or drop by the museum during business hours. Spaces are limited. Reserve today!

"MAKE IT YOUR OWN" t-shirt reconstruction competition

The Costume Museum of Canada in partnership with Mitchell Fabrics & T-Shirt Connection presents "Make it your own" t-shirt reconstruction competition beginning January 2nd, 2010. T-Shirt can be picked up at the museum until February 1, 2010 and deadline for all entries is February 12. The judging event happens on February 15th where participants will show off their designs to the judges.

Participants will be given a blank t-shirt to reconstruct and design into whatever they want, however they want. We are looking for the most innovative concept in re-design and the final product doesn’t even have to be a t-shirt - it could end up being a dress, handbag or even pants. The object is to let your creative side loose.

As a participant, you are allowed to do whatever they want with your t-shirts but the base of the final garment must be made of the original t-shirt.

Entry fee is $10.

Prizes: 1st - $300, 2nd - $150, 3rd - $50 and prize package from Sew Dandee.

Call 989-0072 or email info@costumemuseum for more information.

Maison Gabrielle Roy hosts The Dirty Thirties Exhibit

The Costume Museum of Canada is pleased to partner with Maison Gabrielle Roy in celebration of the famed Franco-Manitoban author's 100th birthday.  From September 2009 to February 2010, visitors will be able to experience the breadth of style and function in clothing from the Dirty Thirties: a decade of great economic challenges, but also a time of fantastic innovation in design and culture, including the formative years of Mlle. Roy's writing career that would capture national attention in the decade to follow.
